Rome and Renaissance: at the beach in Anzio, Italy.

Around 30 miles south of Rome is the picturesque port of Anzio, birthplace of two of the Roman Empire’s most colourful emperors – Caligula and Nero – and the site of several fine beaches and resorts as well as the ruins of one of Nero’s Imperial palaces.  Invaded by the Allies in 1944 on their way to Rome, Anzio is an ideal place to gather, assemble our bikes and get our first taste of Italian history, cuisine and hospitality before riding on to the Eternal City.  After exploring Rome and accompanied by our support van and bike mechanic, our cycling guide will lead us on a ride though the scenic Italian countryside to the historic port city of Ancona on the Adriatic coast.  After lingering to explore the city’s many terrific beaches and ancient monuments, we will depart by train heading north for the seaside resort city of Rimini.  Famed for its extensive beaches, many monuments and its still functioning, 2000-year-old Roman bridge, Rimini will host us for three days of riding before we head inland by train through the gentle hills and endless vineyards of Tuscany to the magnificent city of Florence. Known world-wide as a centre of art, fashion and culture, Florence boasts a historic centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is widely considered to be the birthplace of the Renaissance.

The occasional train rides will allow us to shorten the distances between stops so that we have enough time to explore the historic cities we have chosen for this taste of central Italy.  Locally engaged cultural guides and experts will be on hand to make sure we don’t miss out on any hidden treasures during our stops.  Mixing cycling with city walks and short train rides will allow us to get the best of the scenic countryside and culturally rich cities while leaving time for relaxing and savouring the experience during our two weeks together.

Cycle Rental

Bicycle Breeze has bike rentals at great prices. For this cycling tour you will need either a hybrid or a road bike. All will work. Should you prefer to bring your own that is fine with us, you will get the same mechanical assistance as the renters.

Check your travel company for costs of shipping your bike. Depending on your country of embarkation you may be better to rent. Renting has other positive aspects. Your bike will not get lost in transit. It is far easier to travel without a bike box and spare bikes are on the bus for renters. The negative side is that this is not your favourite ride.
